CURRENT PROJECTS – SPRING 2011
Important announcement!
We are pleased to announce the next children’s charity that Wings students will support.
Swa Vana is an organisation based in South Africa who provide essential support to Orphans and Vulnerable children. These children have been lost their parents as they have died from HIV aids or other illnesses related to poverty. Because of this, the children find themselves without adults in their homes, leaving them to care for themselves and their even younger brothers and sisters.

Living in communities with little access to welfare, the children have to find ways to survive on their own. Not only does this mean that they cannot go to school, but they also face hunger and illness as a part of their daily lives. On top of this, these children are also vulnerable to people who would take advantage of their situation to exploit or abuse them.
Swa Vana provides a life-line of care and support to these children. The organisation was set up in 2004 by Charmaine and Andre Krugel when they were asked by the community members of Huntington to assist. This community and the others helped by Swa Vana are based in the north of the country of South Africa.
Swa Vana’s key goals are to:
- Offer physical and psycological support to the children of the communities
- Empower and equip the wider community to care for these children
- Help members of the community become self sustainable through education and enterprise, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty.
Swa Vana currently cares for 400 children on a daily basis. For more information visit Swa Vana’s website http://www.swavana.co.za/

Wings Seasons
Wings supported projects are divided into seasons. A ’season’ means the goal we are helping e.g a donation to a local toy library and the amount we want to raise e.g. £500. It also defines the time-frame we’re aiming for e.g by end of spring term 2010.
Who we support
All the projects we support will improve the lives of children or young people in some way. This will be in the area of health, education or the arts. In this way we create an avenue for young people to help their peers who need it. This process empowers young people on both sides. Those who give grow as people, learning a sense of community responsibility and their own effectiveness to make change. Those who receive are helped move out of disadvantage to a better situation.
Wings forums
Every half-term we talk about the projects we’re working on and feedback on projects we’ve supported. We’ll look at pictures, letters of thanks, press coverage etc. The forum is a chance to talk about how we feel about what we’ve achieved, and look forward to doing even more.
