MeWe Youth a Big Hit in Germany
In July 2010 the MeWe Youth made its 3rd trip to Oldenburg, Germany. This fantastic annual event brings together young people from a number of European countries to create a joint theatre performance. The theme of this years work was ‘Poverty and the Desire for Change’. Young actors from Gemany, Latvia Spain, Poland and the UK worked together for 12 days to devise a moving play highlighting the effects of poverty on their communities. The creative process encouraged the students to share experiences from their different national perspectives, and find common solutions to the issues explored.
The project was hosted by the German youth organisation ‘Jugendkulturarbeit’ who are based in Oldenburg, northern Germany.
What’s extra special about the project is that the young people not only get to work together, but live together in the large project house. The participants share mealtimes, take on household tasks and socialise in their spare time.
Kingston Upon Thames is twinned with Oldenburg, and this project builds on the warm partnership Kingston Council has developed with the German town. The exchange programme was initiated by Kingston Council’s International Partnership Co-ordinator Brigitte Pfender
