Summer 2011 - Youth Leaders Wanted

MeWe is all about youth. Our fantastic projects are led by young people, having fun and gaining skills at the same time. This summer we want to sign up a number of new recruits to join our great team. We’ll get you involved in a range of activities such as dance, acting, singing, film making, script-writing and design. We’ll train you in the area you choose and get you to use them in exciting community projects.  Even better is that all of this is FREE OF CHARGE, and you don’t need any experience. If you are aged between 13 and 25 and would like to volunteer your  time, you’re just right! If you’d like more info call Vernon on 07754 928126, or you can email us at info@mewe.org.uk.

MeWe Documentary ‘Rumba n Roots’ hits the Highlights

APD_Illustration_Cropped

Special screening December 2010

Last year the MeWe youth worked in partnership with Kingston organisation African Positive Outlook to make a documentary on African People’s Dance (APD). The film was entitled ‘Rumba n Roots’. This informative and fun piece of work looked at the evolution of African Dance in the UK, and exciting off-shoots such as the notorious ‘Booty Dance’. The film, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, featured the leading practitioners in APD in the UK.

The documentary has been excellently received, with enthusiastic reviews from professionals in the world of dance and theatre.

Once such person is Michael Walling of Border Crossings who invited MeWe to screen the documentary at the Practice Exchange event. This event, delivered by Border Crossings and the Platform for Intercultural Europe takes place at Rose Bruford College on 16th December.

The event will explore how the the arts have contributed to democratic development in ethnically and culturally diverse societies. The insights will be shared with European partners attending the event.

Rumba n Roots will support the goals of the event by showing how the amalgam of Africa and Europe can create exciting new forms in performing arts.
